Player reception

Beast of Reincarnation

Game Freak’s action RPG about a girl and her dog wins players over with its parry-based fights, and loses many with repetition and a $59.99 price.

In short

As of 12 October, 57% of 4,286 player reviews recommend it. Players praise the parry-based combat, which grows as Emma and Koo learn new skills. The complaints are enemies and bosses that keep returning, a slow and stiff opening to the story, a large world with little in it and a price many find too high. Eight patches since launch have added ultrawide support, skippable cutscenes, harder modes and a field-of-view setting, and the latest reviews are kinder.

The combat is the best part.
Players enjoy the parries, Koo’s commands and the skill combos, and find the fighting better as more skills unlock. Some find the parry window too forgiving.110
Too much repeats.
A small set of regular enemies returns all game, and bosses come back two or three times with little change. Players in both samples say it makes the game drag.110
The story starts slowly.
Players find the opening chapters stiff and the characters flat. Many who keep going say it grips them after the midpoint and that the ending pays off.110
The world feels empty.
Large zones look alike and hold few people, few enemies and little worth finding. Players enjoy moving through them with the vine-hair.110
Performance improved with patches.
Launch players met a fixed 1080p default, no ultrawide support and slow cutscenes. Updates since have added ultrawide, frame generation and skippable cutscenes, and the latest reviews report it running better, with some stutter left.110112113
Many find $59.99 too much.
Players compare it with other action RPGs at the price and suggest waiting for a sale.110
